Cabin Fever

The kids and I had cabin fever REALLY bad by Thursday evening. When I got the call that our school would be closed on Friday, I was dumbfounded. I had REALLY wanted to go back yesterday, but it wasn't going to happen.

I have never felt so excited about going to the grocery store last night! We went out to dinner and then went shopping. The kids did well and I think it changed all of our attitudes for the better.

This morning, I had to go to Lebanon for a Spelling Bee. I was in the third grade Spelling Bee and was amazed at the kids' spelling abilities. I don't think I could've spelled works like copyright, execution, physical, education, and absurd in third grade. Kudos to the kids! My former student who is in 4th grade now came in 3rd place! My current student came in 5th. It's amazing how great spellers they were!

We were going out to dinner tonight with Matt's parents. I was trying to get Carleigh to put her shoes on, so of course, she and I disagree on what shoes to wear (Yep, it's starting ALREADY!). She thinks that it is perfectly fine to wear flip flops in January, in the freezing winter with snow and ice on the ground. She says "I wear flip flops Mommy!" She took her shoes off (which she does ALL the time) in the van last night and found the flip flops in the van, puts them on and she demands she wear them into the house. Oh my! The clothing battle has begun.

We found out that our church services are canceled due to the parking lots. So we will be staying home which will feel very weird! Then we are hosting a Super Bowl party with our friends Shannon and Niki. Go Cardinals!!!

Things that made me laugh today...

Matt got stuck in the driveway early this morning (he had to be at work at 6am) and so I decided to shovel the driveway for him this evening. I tell him that I was going to shovel the driveway and out I went.

Coming back in from the freezing cold (a Caribbean cruise sounds great right now) Carleigh comes up to me and says "I shovel snow." She then lifts up this tiny little sand shovel and wants to go out and shovel. She is too funny! She is at that literal stage!

Cody was watching "Sesame Street" and saw a pig. He says "oh, a pig!" and then he snorts. He cracks me up!

I was watching "American Idol" tonight and boy did they have some interesting people on there, especially the last girl who auditioned last year. (She also reminds me of someone I know.)

Getting the call that we were closed made me laugh because I was totally NOT expecting it!

While I was TRYING to get Carleigh down for a nap, my wonderful brother-in-law decided that it was the perfect time to clear the parking lot right outside my window. We heard a noise, Carleigh pops up her little head and says "What was that?!" She then looks out the window and cries "Oh a tractor! I watch!"

We are all getting cabin fever here!

Another snow day!

I got the call AFTER I had showered, dried my hair, ironed my work clothes, and packed up everything for a school day. I was starting to wonder since ALL and yes I say ALL public and private schools within an hour radius were closed. We were on a 2 hour delay and just as I was getting dressed, I got the call. After thinking about it, I think maybe there was something wrong with the calling system as I got two phone calls by two different people within 2 minutes of each other. Regardless, I am glad to be off again.

The goal today is to organize and clean the kids' closet and organized the laundry room. I cleaned, tossed and organized my bedroom last night. Boy I could get used to have days off! I will have everything clean and organized BEFORE the weekend and just relax and play with the kids!

I also plan on doing some learning activities with Cody and Carleigh. They do not have school on Fridays so they only had one day of school this week. I really do not want their learning to be curved so we will have some fun around the kitchen table playing learning games, coloring and working on some speech activities.

More snow pics

Snowstorm 2009

What a storm it has been! It started Monday evening before 10pm with snow and didn't end until Wednesday at noon. We received 5 inches of snow Tuesday morning, then the calm or eye of the storm. After 1pm, the freezing rain hit and continued until 4am or so when it transferred back to snow this morning. We received probably 6 more inches of snow. I think in all we have a little over a foot of snow. The kids and I got out and then my parents came over to see them playing in it. They loved it and did not want to come back inside.

Look at the day 1 and day 2 pics of the playhouse. You can tell a drastic difference.
Day 2 is the first pic (blogger switched them around on me) and the second pic is day 1.

Playing in the white death

Snow Angels

My mom decided to make a snow angel and of course Cody decided to do it next all on his own without anyone prompting him and then Carleigh decided to do it as well. At lunch time, Carleigh was talking about the snow and making the snow angel. My guess is that we may have to go out again with Matt gets home so they can play in it once again.

Snow Day!

I was up at 5am this morning checking the news and awaiting a phone call from two schools (my school and the kids' school district). I saw that both schools were closed on the news before getting the 5:20am and 6:00am phone calls. Matt had to be at work at 6am so he was up getting ready when at 5am Carleigh walks into the living room. She NEVER gets up that early! After a little tv, she and I crashed on the couch and didn't stir until 8:30am. Not too long after that, my parents came over and had went out to breakfast. Nothing stops them in their 4 wheel drive truck!

As of 8am, we had between 4-5 inches of snow. Now it is icing and will continue icing through the evening. Around 4 am or so, it is supposed to go back to snow and we could get 4-6 more inches of snow. Whoa! I was going to take Cody and Carleigh out when the freezing rain started so we will wait until tomorrow to build a snowman. They cannot wait to play in it! We should get around 10 or so inches of snow. Great for snowman building.

I have taken advantage of the snow day to get some grading done and I am hoping to have all grading finished and entered into the computer system by tomorrow morning and then focus on the laundry. I am almost certain we will have another snow day tomorrow which will be our last calamity day (unless the state waives the 3 days off due to power outages back on my birthday).

We are staying in, having fun, and watching all the white stuff fall from the sky!

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

As if the evening was bad enough...

I was in the bedroom, the kids were playing in the family room with Matt. Cody trips and hits his head on something and a HUGE goosegg comes out on his forehead. It was so scary and of course Cody fought us while we were attempting to put ice on it.

I think I have aged another 10 years this evening! If I didn't dye my hair, it would be all gray by now with all the stress and scares that my two have given me in the past 5 years. Parenting is not for the faint of heart!

Popcorn Kernel Saga....

My mom calls me not to late after my students leave for the day. She tells me that she fears that Carleigh has shoved a popcorn kernel up her nose. I tell mom to get a Qtip and try to get it out. This causes Carleigh's nose to bleed slightly and thus a very disturbed 3 year old. I come home and Carleigh was upset and acting weird. I try to get a look at it and cannot tell if anything is up there.

I call the pediatrician for advice and they suggested bringing her in. Matt takes her in and kills two birds with one stone: they check her nose and her ears (she has a follow-up tomorrow to check her ears and I suggested them to check it now so we don't have to go back in tomorrow). Well, the ped cannot find the popcorn kernel. So..... it is either wedged up so high that she will need to go to an ENT or it fell out when my mom wasn't looking. We are praying for the latter. The dr was feeling pretty good that it fell out, but we have to keep an eye on her nose and it she starts to get a runny nose, it is still in there and we will have to go to an ENT specialist. Just lovely! There is never a dull moment in this household!!

And the exciting news is that we are supposed to get our first real snowfall with an expected 3-5 inches by tomorrow morning and then another round Tuesday night into Wednesday. I would love to have two snow days!! I really need some time to spend with my two and of course work on Mt. Laundry that was neglected since I had to work yesterday.

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

I came home from work today and saw this...

After having an incredibly difficult day, this made me smile! I will add this to Carleigh's "Weird places to fall asleep!" She has fell asleep sitting up in her high chair, fell asleep on the couch with her head resting on her hands while watching tv, fell asleep under a bed, fell asleep in a regular chair, and now falling asleep under a table! That's not including falling asleep in the hallway to the kitchen or next to her babysitter. I showed her the pic and she said "Carleigh was sleeping!" Cody repeated her.

Carleigh has become a fan of my baked spaghetti and she was trying to eat it with a fork this evening. She forked a long piece of noodle and cried "Oh, wow! A big one!" She keeps us in stitches let me tell you! I am thinking that baked spaghetti may be on the menu for her birthday party in a couple of months. Cody successfully ate a noodle and Carleigh said "Good job, Cody!" Awww....my little encourager! I am looking forward to meeting with her teacher tomorrow for her IEP meeting.

Presidential Inauguration

This was the first time that I have watched a Presidential Inauguration with my class. Last time was 2001 and we just had gotten internet at our school let alone being able to watch it on the big screen. In fact, it was my first year of teaching second grade and first full-year of teaching when George W. Bush was sworn into office.

Well, this year, my class and the other second grade class watched it via BIG SCREEN on our Smartboard. Yep, we were feeling pretty good to be watching it on JUMBO screen. It was very exciting and yet I was watching my second graders and their reactions to it. When Pastor Rick Warren was praying, my class humbly bowed their heads, one little girl B lifted her hands in prayer and praise (and I might add she is a BIG Obama fan!). Whenever the audience applauded or they wanted everyone to stand, there goes my class standing and applauding. My co-worker Joanne and I thought it was rather amusing!

Of course, the highlight was eating lunch in my classroom (which smelled like a lunchbox the REST of the afternoon!) and watching it all. It was a moment in history that I didn't want them to forget. Hopefully years down the road, they will think about this and say "Oh, wasn't Mrs. S the best and let us watch it on the Smartboard?" By then, the Smartboard will be replaced with some better mode of technology!!

Cody's Homemade Presents

I stumbled upon a few pillow and blanket kits that were Mickey Mouse. Of course I had to buy them for Codeman! He absolultely loves his new blanket and pillow and hopefully they will keep him extra warm during this very cold spell we are having.

I am now starting to look at blankets and pillows to make for Carleigh's birthday.

Cody's 5th Birthday Party!

Cody had a wonderful and fun birthday party. The theme was Mickey Mouse as he loves that mouse and all the Clubhouse gang! We had 24 people over which is a bit crowded in our home and if everyone would have showed up, it would have been closer to 30 people. It was a fun time and everyone seen to spread out through the house. We had pizza, hanky panky, salad, chips/pretzels, fruit, birthday cake and ice cream.

Thank you all for coming out and celebrating Cody's birthday with us. He is our precious little boy!

Opening Presents

Cody had a LOT of presents to open. He received lots of Mickey presents as well as alot of money. We are probably going to buy more summer clothes and possibly a big wheel bike with his birthday money.

Happy 5th Birthday, Cody!

Today is my sweet boy's 5th birthday! I cannot even FATHOM that it has been five years! My 33lb boy was born 4lb 12oz and 17 inches long. We brought him home at 5lb 2oz. I'll never forget that cold and snowy evening as we journeyed to the hospital and were a BUNDLE of nerves. Of course we were a bundle of nerves coming home because for one, we have never taken care of a newborn let alone a PREMIE! He was just the tiniest little thing I had ever seen.

That tiny little premie has blossomed into a tall, skinny, yet amazing sweet, loving little boy. I am so blessed that God designed for me to be his mommmy. If you have ever met Cody, you know that he is the MOST loving, sweet boy. There is just something so innocent and precious about him and God has indeed made him very special and I am so excited to see what the Lord has in store for his future.

Happy 5th Birthday, my sweet boy!

The Smartboard

This is my Smartboard. It is rather large and for some reason my camera would not use the flash as to ruin the natural lighting of the screen. Anyhow, these were two sites that we visit for vocabulary practice and science lesson review. I found more math practice from our math curriculum and the kids were thrilled. The board stands a little bit above my head (heigh-wise and is about 4 or 5 feet wide.) All you have to do is touch the screen and you can go to another website or any kind of link that is on the board. It is basically a computer board. The kids are fascinated by it!

Epiphany in the Classroom

The Smartboard arrived in my classroom on Friday. My class has known about it for quite some time. When they arrived back from music class, they were like "Whooo...is that a.....Smartboard?" I didn't turn it on that day because, well, you need it hooked up to a laptop with the Smartboard software. Although I am a techie, I just can't create a laptop out of thin air!! Our IT person (whose classroom is right next to mine) hooked it up with a school laptop and she showed me a few things and then scanned my morning work in for today.

I came in, went over to get the projector and laptop, hooked it up and we were in business! My class was oooooing and ahhhhing when they walked in and I had the morning work displayed on the huge whiteboard. But that wasn't the epiphany moment in the classroom, oh that is coming up soon! I then searched our Language Arts curriculum site and found our weekly story and found the reading vocabulary words. They had constructed a game and we played it before snack time. We also did our Shurley English sentences and that is when the big Epiphany occured...one of my students whom I will call E shouted out "This is the BEST day of my LIFE!" (He reminds me of Alex Keaton of "Family Ties.") He is a funny, yet VERY energetic and lively kid.

With my teacher juices flowing, I go onto our Math program and found extra practice, models, manipulatives and GAMES (students love that!) and we practice by playing a few games before taking our paper and pencil chapter test. After Math comes Science and there was no stopping me then...I tried our science curriculum and they had an animated review of the moon and the stars lesson that we read today. I stumble upon pictures that NASA took and the kids were oooing and ahhhhing again.

By this time, it is ready for everyone to pack up and Alex ummm I mean E, shouts (again) out "Oh I don't want to go home!"

That does a teacher good, but it also makes me think, ummmm, was I THAT boring before I got a Smartboard? Oh, and all the teachers are green with envy that I (yes the QUIET one that I am) got the FIRST smartboard in the whole school. Basically the IT person is right next to me (next door) and I am not afraid to play around with stuff so I was the guinea pig. I have had quiet a few visitors aka teachers popping in and looking at it!

It's amazing what a little technology and fun can do to energize my students and myself!! Okay I will promise take a pic of it tomorrow and post on Wed (barring any snow days!) for those of you who haven't seen a Smartboard.

Oh Be Careful Little Ears What You Hear

The song "Oh Be Careful Little Eyes What You See" has been running in my head today because Carleigh overhead a conversation that my mom and I were having over the light fixture above the kitchen sink and how our landlord had it installed. We were frustrated because we had new blinds we wanted to put up in the kitchen window and were having problems.

We said the S word....."stupid" (oh, come on, not THAT other word!). Well now, Carleigh has coined the word and is calling Cody "stupid" and at dinner, she said "You stupid kitty!" Then, Cody (OF COURSE) repeated her and said "Stupid kitty" and then he said "stupid piano." *sigh*

I guess we will have to choose our words carefully now (not that we talk bad anyway) and really think about words before we say them. We do not want her going to preschool or church and calling someone "stupid!"

"Oh Be Carefully Little Eyes" is a song I sing with my class during Bible time. Here are the lyrics:

Oh be careful little eyes what you see,
Oh be careful little eyes what you see,
For the Father up above is looking down in love,
So be careful little eyes what you see.

Oh be careful little ears what you hear,
Oh be careful little ears what you hear,
For the Father up above is looking down in love,
So be careful little ears what you hear.

Oh be careful little hands what you do,
Oh be careful little hands what you do,
For the Father up above is looking down in love,
So be careful little hands what you do.

Oh be careful little tongue what you say,
Oh be careful little tongue what you say,
For the Father up above is looking down in love,
So be careful little tongue what you say.

Oh be careful little feet where you go,
Oh be careful little feet where you go,
For the Father up above is looking down in love,
So be careful little feet where you go.

Oh be careful little heart who you trust,
Oh be careful little heart who you trust,
For the Father up above is looking down in love,
So be careful little heart who you trust.

Oh be careful little mind what you think,
Oh be careful little mind what you think,
For the Father up above is looking down in love,
So be careful little mind what you think.

Party Preparations

I love having parties for my little blessings, but it takes a LOT of work! The past few years we have been having them at restaurants that have party rooms and it worked okay until last year. I decided to have them at home from now on due to reorganizing and if we are all a little cramped, oh well!

Last night, I cleaned thecarpets in the front playroom, hallway, my bedroom, the family room, hallway, and Cody's bedroom. Then I went over it again this morning. My mom came over and we cleaned the kitchen and we are getting new curtains for my back family room as well as a few other new things. The house will be spiffy for the party!!

Cody and Carleigh have been curious about all the heavy cleaning especially the carpet cleaner machine. Carleigh of course was TERRIFIED of it and would hide under the sofa table or sit in Matt's lap. Cody who has no fear was more curious.

Now, I am getting ready to make a meal for a family who just had a baby in our Sunday School class and we will have the same thing for dinner...baked spaghetti....yum!

I have a few more things that I will do, put I plan on spacing out this whole week. I am so glad I have planned ahead to get the big things taken care of this weekend. Now, on to planning the design of his special birthday cake! (Birthday preparations are NEVER ending!)

Getting Ready to Party!

This weekend, we will be getting ready for Cody's Mickey Mouse birthday party. I'll mostly be cleaning and cleaning the carpet (fun fun fun!) as well as shop for party supplies and decorations. Cody is so excited that his birthday is coming up and we practice singing "Happy Birthday." Today, he sang "Happy Birthday Mommy" ummmm Cody, my birthday was back in September silly boy!

I found the perfect birthday gift for my little guy as well as a few other gifts. One gift is that I found a Mickey Mouse pillow sham kit and I am making it and buying a pillow to put inside. He LOVES anything with Mickey so I know that will be a hit!

For those of you coming to his party, just a reminder that it is Saturday, January 17th at 5:30p.m. For ideas, anything Mickey Mouse is a hit (he will be wearing his Mickey pjs the night before and another pair the night after his party). He also loves SpongeBob (insert huge *SIGH*).

School is going well and I cannot wait for my Smartboard to be put together and brought down to my room. I already have the a/v cart where the projector and laptop will be placed on and I re-arranged my room a little today in preparation for it to come. I hope it comes soon because I already have a few lesson ideas that would be perfect IF we are still studying the planets when it arrives. I promise to take pics of the smartboard for those of you who haven't seen them. I cannot take pics of my students so I will probably be demonstrating it in the pics. My teacher creative juices are already flowing with how it will change the learning curve in my classroom. This will really get all those visual and kinesthic learners a run for their money!! (I am such a HUGE visual learner myself!)

Okay, I digressed from the main idea of this post. Sorry!

Everyone went back to school or work yesterday. It was hard getting up early and driving to school, but once I was there, it felt like I had not been gone for 16 days! Carleigh was all smiles when we talked about her first day back and this week, her class is reading "The Kitten" by Jan Brett (one of my fave books!) and are talking about mittens all week.

It was easier for me to wake up this morning since my body was in shock yesterday morning and now is getting used to the 5:3am wake up call. (And I fell asleep much easier as well.)

Preparing for normalcy

I wish I could rewind the past 2 weeks and start all over again! I have really enjoyed these past 2 full weeks plus 3 weekends. The hardest part is getting up early and missing my two kiddos. Cody and Carleigh are VERY excited to go back and I am so glad that they love school!

I am looking forward to playing on the SmartBoard I am getting and learning how to use it with my class. Hopefully it won't be too difficult to figure out. I am so excited about all the possibilities with it and hopefully will eliminate extra worksheets (yuck)!

My students and the teachers get to wear sweatsuits tomorrow which is exciting since our school has a uniform policy. I just hope I don't get too comfortable and fall asleep during my break! HaHaHaa

So, this evening, I am getting the backpacks ready, clothes laid out, lesson plans finished, and become mentally prepared for a full week of school. I am almost embarrassed to admit that I haven't thought about school or my students for 2 weeks, but I REALLY needed that mental break as teaching does get VERY stressful!

The next day off is Martin Luther King Jr day in two weeks so these 2 weeks will fly by! And also, a special little boy will be having a birthday in less than 2 weeks!!!

IKEA Addict

I went with my friend Jen to IKEA for the first time yesterday. Let's just say that I fell in love with that store! I now know which bed I am getting and dresser for my bedroom in a couple of months! I also found a toy divider/clothes closet that will divide the kids' room perfectly (until we can buy a house in a year or so.)

I found a floor lamp for $6.99 for the kids' new playroom and just love it! So, what am I doing tonight? Well, my sister, mom, niece, Carleigh and I are planning a women's night out of shopping at IKEA, dinner and more shopping. I asked Carleigh if she wanted to go shopping with Aunt Connie tonight and she raised her little hand and said "I do!" Then she said "Get my shoes!" She thought we were going right now! heHeHe!!

I think I am becoming addicted to IKEA!!
